Description Qur’an and Tajwid are part of the main teachings in Islam. Islam prioritizes the learning of the Arabic language to recite the Qur’an. Tajwid on the other hand, focuses in the learning of the right ways of recitation that follows with practice of the many regulations and rules pertaining to the Qur’an recitation.
Objectives The course aims to help students understand the importance of the recitation of the Qur’an in the regular form, using the Tajwid rules. Students learn the Tajwid and practice it throughout their recitations. Moreover, they are assisted through their memorization process of the Qur’an parts that are called “surah” or “juz”.

1Tajwid rules: Methods of causing sound and articulating mechanism; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 1-9; Memorization: surah al-Fatiha Familiarity with the basic concepts of Qur’an and Tajwid. Categorization and distinction of concepts related to Tajwid rules. Introduction to the course and syllabus. Methods of causing sound are introduced briefly. Students are required to practice and produce audible sounds that help in the articulation mechanism of the right pronounciation of the Arabic letters. There are different types of articulations of sounds: Non-voweled letters الحروف الساكنة, the Madd letters حروف المد, vowelled letters الحروف المتحركة, shaddah letters الحروف المشددة, the letters of Qalqalah حروف القلقلة. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 1-9. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Fatiha.
2Tajwid rules:Articulation points I ; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 10-15; Memorization: surah al-Falaq and an-Nas Articulation points I: Empty space in the mouth & throat The throat خ غ ح ع ه ء The roof of the mouth The Tongue Deepest part of the tongue ق ك Middle part of the tongue ي ش ج Deepest edge of the tongue ض Methods of causing sound are introduced briefly. Students are required to practice and produce audible sounds that help in the articulation mechanism of the right pronounciation of the Arabic letters. Maddi Tabii is introduced briefly, the seven categories and its practice. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 10-15. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Falaq and an-Nas.
3Tajwid rules: Articulation points II; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 16-22; Memorization: surah al-Masad and al-Ikhlas Articulation points II: Front side of the tongue ل Tip of the tongue ر ن Tip of the tongue ت د ط Tip of the tongue ص ز س Tip of the tongue ث ذ ظ The lips ف ب The lips و The nose Rules of mim sakinah are explained using examples and also practicing from the front recitation. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 16-22. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Masad and al-Ikhlas.
4Tajwid rules: Ruling of Isti’adhah & Basmalah, the rules of surah at-Tawbah; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 23-29 ; Memorization: surah al-Nasr and al-Kafirun Surah at-Taubah is given as an example for the practice of the rule of basmala. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 23-29. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Nasr and al-Kafirun.
5Tajwid rules: The characteristics of the Letters; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 30-37; Memorization: surah al-Kauthar and al-Ma’un Rules of the whisper and the apparent الهمس و الجهر is explained briefly using examples. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 30-37. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Kauthar and al-Ma’un.
6Tajwid rules:The strength, in-between, and softness (shiddah, tawassut, rahawa); Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 38-45; Memorization: surah al-Quraysh and al-Fil Rule of shiddah, tawassut and rahwat الشدة والتوسط والرخاوة is explained briefly, using examples. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 38-45. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Quraysh and al-Fil.
7Tajwid rules:The elevated (istila’) and the lowered (istiqaal); Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 46-52; Memorization: surah al-Humaza and al-‘Asr الاستعلاء و الاستفال Rule of istila’ and istiqal is explained briefly, using examples. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 46-52. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Humaza and al-Asr.

9Tajwid rules: The adhesion and the open (al-itbaaq wa’l infitah), The fluent and the forbidden (al-ismaat wa’l idhlaaq) ; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 53-61; Memorization: surah al-Takathur and al-Qari’ah Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 53-61. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Takathur and al-Qariah.
10Tajwid rules: al-Qalqalah and it’s types; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 62-70; Memorization: surah al-‘Adiyaat and al-Zilzaal The rule of qalqalah and its practice is given using examples. Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 62-70. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Adiyaat and al-Zilzal.
11Tajwid rules: The ease (al-lin) and deviation (al-inhiraf); Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 71-77; Memorization: surah al-‘Alaq and al-Bayyinah Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 71-77. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Alaq and al-Bayyinah.
12Tajwid rules: The relationship between two meeting letters; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 78-83; Memorization: surah al-Qadr and al-Tin The relationship between two meeting letters: Identical letters المتماثلان Similar letters المتجانسين Close letters المتقاربين Far apart letters المتباعدين Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 78-83. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Qadr and al-Tin.
13Tajwid rules: the repetition (at-takarrur) and the spreading around (at-tafashi) and Lam sakinah rules; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 84-91; Memorization: surah al-Inshirah and al-Duha’ Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 84-91. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Inshirah and al-Duha.
14Tajwid rules: The lengthening (al-istitalah) and the ghunnah; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 92-100; Memorization: surah al-Layl and al-Shams Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 92-100. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Layl and al-Shams.
15Project; Tajwid rules: Hamzatu’l qat’i and hamzatu’l wasl; Recitation: surah Al-i ‘Imran, 101-108; Memorization: surah al-Balad and al-Fajr Recitation is practiced in surah Al-i Imran, verses 101-108. Memorization is practiced in surah al-Balad and al-Fajr.

1At the end of this course students will be able to know the concepts related to Qu’an and Tajwid I.
2Students will acquire knowledge on the role of Tajwid rules in reciting the Qur’an correctly.
3Students will gain the knowledge needed to classify, analyze, and evaluate the usefulness of the rules of Tajwid in their recitations.
